License of the packages

The packages are not on sale yet. These are the terms we plan to sell them under; the final text will be on this page when the sale opens.

1. In short

A package is licensed to the company that buys it, once and without expiry. The company may use it in any number of its own projects and of projects made for its clients. It may not pass the files on as a dataset. The official sources the package derives from must stay credited.

2. Who is licensed

The licensee is the company named on the invoice. The license covers its employees and the contractors working for it, on any number of computers and servers. It is not transferable, except together with the whole business.

3. What you may do

Use the files in websites, applications, software products, reports, printed matter and video, for commercial purposes too.
Modify them: simplify, merge, reproject, restyle, join them with your own data.
Deliver to your clients the works you make with them (a map, an application, a dashboard), with the boundaries the work needs.
Serve the boundaries to the users of your application, as far as the application needs to draw or query them.
Keep using the edition you bought forever, with no further payment.

4. What you may not do

Resell, sublicense, publish or share the files of the package, or files converted from them, as a dataset or as a download, for a price or free of charge.
Offer a service whose main purpose is to hand the boundaries to third parties (a boundaries API or a tile service open to others).
Give the package to a client or to another company so that they use it on their own: they need their own license.
Remove or hide the attribution of the sources.

5. Attribution of the sources

Each package is a derived work of official open datasets: we simplified the boundaries, recoded the entities and built the tables. The licenses of those datasets ask that the source be credited wherever the data is published, and this obligation passes on to you. Every package has an ATTRIBUTION.md file with the exact wording; a line such as “Boundaries: adminboundaries.com, from Istat data” next to the map or in the credits is enough. The publishers of the sources do not endorse the packages.

6. Our files and the original data

The two are different things, and this license treats them differently.

The original datasets, as their publishers release them, stay open: anyone can get them from the source and use or redistribute them under the source's own license. This license does not restrict them.
The files of the package are data we generated or enriched: boundaries simplified so that the levels fit, identifiers, translated names, areas, label points, neighbours, history tables, SVG files and examples. These are what section 4 forbids to redistribute.

7. No warranty

The boundaries are generalized and have no official or legal value: they are not suitable for establishing borders, property or jurisdiction. The package is provided as it is; DWMP S.r.l. is liable only up to the price paid for it, except where the law does not allow this limit.

8. Termination and law

The license ends if these terms are breached and the breach is not remedied within 30 days of our notice; the files must then be deleted. The license is governed by Italian law and the court of Modena has jurisdiction.

9. Questions
